Thank you for agreeing to review the following volume. We hope that you can complete the review by ______________. Please observe the following guidelines:
- The Book Review Editor selects reviewers based on their expertise in relation to the content of the book.
- Place the bibliographic entry at the top of the first page, using the following examples to guide you:
Introduction to the Synoptic Gospels. By Pheme Perkins. Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2007. ISBN-10: 080281770X . xvi & 312 pages. Cloth. $28.00.
Notes: The title should be in italic and bold-faced type. The choices for binding are Cloth and Paper.
Either ISBN-10 or ISBN-13 numbers are to be provided. They can be located in the publisher’s information in the book or on the cover (or, on Amazon.com, as can the book’s list price). - Reviews should be no longer than 750 words in length.
- Prepare the review itself double-spaced, with one-inch margins all around. Use 12-point type. Do not justify the right margin.
- Write with theologians and pastors in mind, the primary readership of our journal. Your review should do the following:
a. Our goal is to publish reviews that are critical, creative and courteous.
b. Include a statement of the book’s thesis and an outline of its contents.
c. Indicate its significance and/or how it might be useful to pastors, professors, and church members in their work.
d. Enter dialogue with the author to expose strengths and/or weaknesses.
e. Use your creativity to match the review to your own style and/or the book. - A few stylistic notes:
a. Limit capitalization: Bible, but biblical; Christ, but christological.
b. Commas and periods always go within final quotation marks.
c. Do not cite page numbers within the review itself unless you are explicitly quoting the author. - Put your name and some form of identification at the end of the review on the right margin. Examples:
Katherine Luther
Wartburg CollegeFranz Bibfeldt, Pastor
St. Columbia Lutheran Church
Eureka, MO - Word documents are strongly preferred. Document name should be 15-20 characters of the title (without “a” or “the”), followed by an underscore, then by the first four letters of the author’s last name. For example:
Apostoliclettersoffa_Metz.doc
